When was the last time your church had a checkup?

During my annual physical checkup, the doctor stated that my triglycerides were 150 points too high and that I was overweight by thirty pounds. He suggested thirty minutes of exercise five days a week. He instructed me not to eat any sugar and bread and drink lots of water. My doctor suggested those steps for me to take if I wanted to get healthier.  Wow, what a wake-up call! Churches can also become healthier! In fact, there is a way to measure your church’s health and offer steps you can take to become healthier.

Natural Church Development measures the health or quality of a church. A carefully prepared survey is used to examine eight critical characteristics of churches. These quality characteristics are essential in building healthy churches. Each of the quality characteristics measured has a positive relationship with both the quality and quantitative growth of the church.

The secret of growing churches does not consist in pushing or pulling the church in human strength and efforts—but in releasing and developing the potential God himself uses to build his church.

“This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts, and grows; though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, and then full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.” – Mark 4:26-29

The church is designed by God to grow, so growth happens automatically if we remove the obstacles that prevent growth. Growing churches use this growth principle. Natural Church Development has been used by over 40,000 churches worldwide to help churches become healthier. Several churches in the association have completed the NCD process to become healthier. The NCD Process will assist you in developing relevant goals and a plan to see the health of your church increase.
